Does international travel actually hurt teams?

We measured all 24 team-performances in 2024–25 international games against each team's own season baseline. In the game itself: 62.2 plays vs a 59.7 usual average — slightly more, not fewer — and exactly half the teams came in under their play average, a coin flip. The week after returning, teams averaged +23 yards above their baseline, whether they got the bye first (11 of 24 did) or flew straight into the next game. The jet-lag narrative doesn't survive measurement.

Methodology: computed from nflverse play-by-play; a quarter's yards are the yards gained on plays snapped in that quarter. Averages use each player's games played, not team games. Updated 2026-07-29.
