How Many Red-Zone Trips Does an NFL Team Average Per Game?

About 3.4 in 2025, but the spread is wide and predictable: a team's expected trips track its Vegas implied total at roughly trips = 3.1 + 0.25 × (implied points − 18.5). A 28-point implied total forecasts ~5.5 trips; an 17-point implied forecasts under 3.

How we know

Computed from every 2025 red-zone possession in play-by-play. The implied-total relationship (r = 0.39) beat every defensive statistic we tested — opponent red-zone history persists at just 0.19 and adds nothing once you know the spread.

Methodology: computed from nflverse play-by-play; a quarter's yards are the yards gained on plays snapped in that quarter. Averages use each player's games played, not team games. Updated 2026-07-29.
