First-Quarter Props for Beginners — How to Get Started

A first-quarter prop is a bet that settles at the end of Q1 — and because first quarters are scripted, they reward preparation more than any full-game market. What is a first-quarter prop?

A bet on a player's production in the first quarter only — for example 'over 12.5 passing yards in Q1'. It settles when the first quarter ends, not at the final whistle.

How is a Q1 line different from a full-game line?

First quarters are dominated by the opening script — the 10-15 plays a coordinator designs before kickoff — so Q1 production reflects play-caller intent more than game flow. A player's full-game reputation can be very different from his Q1 role.

How do I know if a Q1 over is a good bet?

Three checks: the player's Q1 average and how often he actually cleared the line (his hit rate), the defense's Q1 rank against his stat, and whether his role is current — depth charts move. Every check has a free page on this site.

What mistakes do beginners make with quarter props?

Betting the full-game name instead of the Q1 role; ignoring the defense's quarter profile; and parlaying correlated legs (a QB and his receiver) at full multiplied odds when the book has already priced the correlation.

How to get started — four steps

  1. Pick the player page. Every skill player has a quarter-by-quarter page: his Q1 average, his per-quarter targets or carries, and his recent game log.
  2. Read his Q1 number against the line. An average above the line is not enough — look at how many of his games actually cleared it.
  3. Check the defense's quarter profile. The defense pages rank all 32 teams by yards allowed per quarter, split by position — a bottom-5 Q1 pass defense changes the math.
